Height Instead of Floor Space

A tall hanger gives you a vertical column of planting in a corner that would never take a plant stand. The designs here run long, carry more than one pot, or both. The multi-pot cotton hanger stacks planters down one line of cord, while the triple-pot design spreads the same idea over three levels. Doubles take a different approach, holding two pots side by side, which reads wide rather than tall and works well across a broad window frame.

Load, Hardware and Which Plants to Stack

Scale brings weight. Three six-inch pots, freshly watered, can pass twenty pounds on a single fixing, so a joist screw or a heavy-rated toggle is the starting point rather than an afterthought. Check the rating stamped on the hook too, since the metal is often the weakest part of the chain, not the rope. Arrange plants by habit: something upright and compact at the top, trailers below, so the lower pots are not left in shade. Cord in these pieces tends toward 4 mm and 5 mm, thick enough to carry the load and to let the knot pattern read from across the room. Run your fingers through the fringe now and then to keep the tassels straight, and keep the cotton clear of hard afternoon sun, which fades it in patches. Sheltered porches and patios have their own group in the outdoor plant hangers.
