What an Open Knot Pattern Does to a Bulb

Switch one on and the ceiling fills with knot-shaped shadows. That is the whole reason these shades exist: cotton cord tied in an open pattern scatters light instead of trapping it, so one bulb reads as several pools of warm tone across a wall. The pieces here run from a compact cotton shade for a single bulb up to chandeliers wide enough to sit over a dining table. Each one is knotted by hand, and the larger frames use a wooden ring or dowel to hold their shape.

Bulbs, Fittings and Ceiling Height

Heat is the first thing shoppers ask about. Use an LED. It runs cool, and natural cotton has no business anywhere near a halogen bulb. Leave an inch or two of air between the knots and the glass so nothing rests against a hot surface. A piece such as the pendant shade that slips over an existing cord set works with the fixture already in the ceiling, so no rewiring is involved. Measure your drop first: every listing gives diameter and length in inches, which is what tells you if a shade clears a table or a nightstand.

Keeping the Cord Pale

Dust settles into fringe faster than into any flat surface. Once a month, run a soft brush attachment over it on the vacuum's lowest suction. Marks come out with a barely damp cloth and patience, and the cord should dry completely before the lamp goes back on. Hang one near a knotted wall mirror and the light it throws gets carried a second time across the room.
