Fixing Cotton Rope to a Rail or Post

A railing gives you a horizontal bar to work with, and that changes the mounting: the hanger loops around the rail and cinches, or drops over a screw-in eye set into a fence post. The pot then rests against a vertical surface rather than swinging free, so gusts move it far less than they would overhead. Light pieces travel best on a rail. The holder sized for air plants weighs almost nothing once mounted, and the wood-backed wall hanger has a rigid top bar that keeps the cord in shape against a fence board.

Natural Cotton Outside: What to Expect

These are cotton pieces, not synthetic rope. Cotton drinks water and holds onto it, so a covered porch, a balcony under an overhang or a shaded patio wall will keep a hanger in good condition much longer than an exposed fence in the rain. Bring them inside over winter. If one does get soaked, unhook it, press the water out gently and let it dry flat where air moves, out of the sun, which stiffens and bleaches the fibers. Spacing along a railing looks better when heights alternate and trailing stems break the line: ivy, string of pearls, a young pothos. Rinse road dust off the cord at the start of the season and comb the fringe straight while it is still damp. Many of the same designs work on an interior wall, which is where the indoor plant hangers take over.
