Anchoring Overhead So Nothing Comes Down

A planter that feels light in your hands changes character once the soil is damp. Ten pounds is ordinary; twenty is not unusual for a big pot. All of it lands on one point in the ceiling. A hook driven into a joist is the sound answer, and between joists a toggle bolt rated well above the loaded weight beats any plastic plug. Locate the joist first, then decide. The three-tier hanger in cotton rope concentrates more load than anything else here, since three pots ride on a single fixing.

Ceiling Height, Drop and Clearance

Eight-foot ceilings leave little margin, which is why the shorter pieces in this group end up in kitchens and above sinks while stairwells and vaulted rooms take the long lengths. Leave room underneath for trailing growth to come down. Hang close to a window and turn the pot a quarter of a rotation each week so the plant fills out on every side instead of leaning toward the glass. Renters who cannot drill often run a tension rod across a window recess, or use a rated adhesive hook for the lightest items, such as the small wall-mounted plant holder. Keep the cotton away from a radiator or a steaming shower head, since constant damp with no airflow is what turns natural fiber musty. When the ceiling is off limits entirely, the fence and railing hangers fix to a horizontal rail instead.
